Middlesborough became the second English club this week to reach a European final. While Arsenal made heavy weather of overcoming Villareal, Boro chose the Houdini route to glory. Again.
The north east club came back from the dead against Basle to reach their first European semi-final. Last night they topped even that achievement when they overturned a 3-0 aggregate deficit to win 4-2 on the night and 4-3 over the two legs. Substitute Massimo Maccarone snatched victory in the 89th minute.
How wonderful to see an unfashionable club from one of the poorest corners of England reach the Uefa cup final. You wouldn't bet against them lifting the trophy. But let's hope they choose the easy route to glory on 10 May.
If the news that Luiz Felipe Scolari has turned down the England job are true, Steve McClaren might just have added a winning flourish to his CV.
